Members of the Eau Claire Area School District (ECASD) board have received many repeating complaints about the student traffic during lunch in the commons area. The school board has decided to make a well-recommended investment to build an underground tunnel beneath the school for student use. Outgoing-Principal Oldenburg himself thought of it himself and stated it would be a great addition to MHS.

The tunnel is currently set to be a 6 feet 5 inches tall and 6 feet wide underpass. A ramp will lead into and out of the shaft. The channel will stretch the full length of the center of the cafeteria extending to a full distance of 20 feet of tunnel underneath the school.

The construction of the underpass will begin Saturday, April 2, 2016. “Starting on a weekend, and continuing work on subsequent weekends, will avoid any disruption to the student body,” Oldenberg added. The final budget plans for the tunnel are still under review but will be finalized before the construction.

The “MHS tunnel” will be built in the hope that the traffic complaints of the MHS students will be removed. Students are excited about being able to use the MHSunnel before the end of this school year.
